In a television receiver of the type having a high-gain, high-sensitivity, closed-loop AGC system, a sufficient video signal must be present on the IF signal path in order to control the gain of the IF amplifier. However, even with a sufficient video signal, the AGC system may produce unwanted oscillations, which are audible and which can cause discomfort to the viewer.

In a receiver of the type described in copending application Ser. No. 722,093, filed July 26, 1976, there is provided a video signal detector circuit for detecting the presence of a video signal in the IF channel and an audio signal detector circuit for detecting the presence of an audio signal in the IF channel. A video signal-to-audio signal switching circuit is provided for coupling the audio signal to the audio signal detector circuit when a video signal is detected, and for coupling the video signal to the video signal detector circuit when an audio signal is detected. When an audio signal is present, the video signal is coupled to the video signal detector circuit by means of the 0b46394aab
