Long Distance Runaround: First incarnation is recorded at Nightingale Studios, a no-name studio in Wimbledon. This is when they're still practising and making themselves up. The sound is really quite cold, and again, it's a very early incarnation. It's got a lot of F Loop and Gibsons.
Hopes And Fears: This is the album that got me all the way into shoegaze. It's the album that made me want to buy all the records that I'd already bought, and everything else that I'd heard of. It's a massive record. It's the first time I'd heard a real dual guitar/synth sound. (It's the first time I'd heard something that sounded live in a studio. The album cover, with all the blurring and darkness, had a massive influence on me!) The first time I'd heard anything like the Bends. At the time, it seemed like a revolutionary album. To me, it still does, it's just so very different to what came after. Everything is so much faster and there's an incredible intensity in the vocals and guitars. (Which is why I love them now.)
On Stage: I never owned it, I just heard a few bootlegs. It sounds like a million miles away, like a totally different band from the one on Forever Alien, it's still a stone cold guitar band and has a lot of funk in it too. (Mike Thorne is the guitarist on that album and later went on to play with the Pretenders.)
What I'd Like For the Future: They had a big 18 months touring, so there's some stuff that's more experimental, that doesn't come across so well on record. I've heard that the band were really uncomfortable with the success - it was making them into a record band, as well as a live band. They toured up to the end of 1987, and then they split up. I love this album - it's got a really live and raw sound, but has a lot of huge production and clarity. But there's still something really immediate and cool about it. The songs are like... big with a sharp edge. The band came back again a few years later, they never really achieved the same success again, but I still love their back catalogue. If I had to choose a favourite, it would be this one.
The sound of the album has improved, but the band's sound has not. The band is still interested in playing psychedelic space rock, but they are playing it as a song, it's not spontaneous and it's more cohesive than on the first album. They've become more bluesy as well.
I love this album, they sound absolutely amazing and they managed to recapture the nostalgia and the glamour that was all around in the 90's. They did a number of live shows in the UK and were part of The Old Grey Whistle Test where they performed this album, it was so nostalgic for me. They were also one of the first bands to play Muse and Portishead and influenced a lot of what was going on back then. I also love them because they have a new album coming out in 2014 called Echo and it will be the band's first since their comeback in 2011. It's called I Don't Want to Spoil the Party 827ec27edc
